The Department of Physics was established among the first ten departments of the institute on November 25, 1931. At the time of its establishment, the department consisted of four staff members: the Head of the Department, two lecturers, and one laboratory assistant. In 1931–1932, the Department of Physics was based in the premises of the Kazakh Pedagogical Institute (KazPI), where lectures and laboratory classes were conducted. Since 1938, following the establishment of the Faculty of Pediatrics, the department’s staff had increased to seven members.
In the post-war years, the department conducted educational and academic activities with students of three faculties: General Medicine, Pediatrics, and Sanitary and Hygiene. The number of staff members increased to nine, including the Head of the Department, three senior lecturers, three lecturers, and two laboratory assistants.
In the second half of the 1950s, with the introduction of part-time and evening forms of education and the establishment of the Faculties of Pharmacy and Dentistry, the educational process at the department became multidisciplinary.
In 1966, a spectral laboratory was established at the department, which enabled its staff to conduct research alongside their teaching activities. The main research topic was “Determination of the Content of Trace Elements in Biological Tissues.” During the same period, a mechanical workshop was established at the department for the repair of equipment belonging not only to the Department of Physics but also to other departments of the institute. Since 1975, the department implemented a new curriculum that introduced new areas of specialization, including Medical Electronics and Medical Cybernetics for second-year students of the Faculties of General Medicine and Pediatrics, as well as Fundamentals of Materials Science for students of the Faculty of Dentistry, with mandatory laboratory classes. The department’s staff developed the necessary methodological materials and teaching aids for both instructors and students.
In 1991, in accordance with the new State Compulsory Educational Standard (SCES), a new discipline, “Computer Science,” was introduced for all specialties. The department’s teaching staff developed a comprehensive set of methodological guidelines for instructors and students. In 1999, in accordance with the SCES, the new discipline “Mathematics” was introduced for first-year students of the Faculties of General Medicine and Pediatrics. The department was subsequently renamed the Department of Medical Biophysics, Computer Science and Mathematics. By Order No. 8 of the Rector of KazNMU dated June 15, 2012, the Department of Medical Biophysics, Informatics and Mathematical Statistics was divided into two modules: the Informatics Module and the Medical Biophysics and Mathematical Statistics Module. By Order No. 5461 l/s of the Rector of KazNMU dated September 21, 2016, the Department of Informatics with a Course in Biophysics was established through the merger of the Informatics Module and the Biophysics Course.На кафедре с 2016-2017 учебного года преподается предмет «Информатика» на английском языке. Преподаватели кафедры разработали учебно-методическую рекомендацию для студентов на английском языке.
Since the 2020–2021 academic year, pursuant to Order No. 353 dated August 14, 2020, the department has been renamed the Department of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).
