Department of Epidemiology KazNMU named after S.D. Asfendiyarova is one of the graduates at the School of Public Health. The department was organized in 1946 at the sanitary and hygienic faculty and functioned until 1964. Then, with the transfer of the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene (1964) to the city of Karaganda, the department was transformed into a course in epidemiology at the department of infectious diseases. The organizer and the first leader was I.K. Karakulov. After the reopening of the Faculty of Sanitation and Hygiene (1989) in 1995. the course was transformed into an independent department of epidemiology, which for more than 18 years was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor S.A. Amireev.
The department fruitfully cooperates with leading foreign experts in epidemiology. In the 2019-2020 academic year, by the order of the rector, the department was merged with the department of general hygiene and ecology and the department of public health and health. Ishambai Karakulov, professor, Soviet Kazakh scientist-epidemiologist and statesman, People’s Commissar (1937-1939), Minister of Health of the Kazakh SSR (1950-1954), Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh SSR, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR, Honored Scientist of the Kazakh SSR and Karakalpak ASSR. On the basis of the Department of Epidemiology, he completed more than 300 scientific and popular scientific works, defended his doctoral dissertation (1950), created a school of epidemiologists, under his leadership, 28 doctoral and candidate dissertations were defended. He was engaged in infectious pathology issues, in particular immunoprophylaxis, microbiology of zoonotic and especially dangerous infections, issues of healthcare organization, history of medicine. He proposed epidemiology, classification of types of infection of people with brucellosis, Q fever, listeriosis and schemes for studying the socio-economic significance of infections.
Amireev Saken Amireevich, Doctor of Medical Sciences, Professor. In 1988, in Moscow, he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “Scientific and organizational foundations of brucellosis surveillance.” In 1992 the Higher Attestation Commission awarded him the title of professor. In 1975 he organized the laboratory of epidemiology of brucellosis at the KazNII of Epidemiology, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases and headed until 1995. On behalf of the USSR Ministry of Health, he participated in the implementation of the All-Union Scientific and Practical Program “The causes of the development of brucellosis infection and its prevention.” On various aspects of the problem of brucellosis, prof. Amireev S.A. published 2 monographs, 4 scientific collections, 6 volumes of scientific reviews on the problem of brucellosis. Under his leadership, 6 doctoral, 12 candidate dissertations on the problems of brucellosis were defended. He also organized for the first time among the CIS countries “School of Vaccine”, which he currently heads. As Deputy Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Immunization under the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, he actively participates in the introduction of new vaccine preparations into healthcare practice, develops methodological guidelines and conducts training cycles for COVID-19 specialists: safety measures Primary health care.

Mergenova Gaukhar Aidarbekovna, Head of the Department since September 2020, Candidate of Medical Sciences, Master of Epidemiology at School of Public Health, State University of New York (SUNY). She has several publications in peer-reviewed journals. Research interests are related to HIV / AIDS, mental health.
